There’s been a lot of talk lately about this thing called sequestration. What is it, what does it mean, how does it affect me?

Sequestration according to Dr. Paul Johnson of Auburn University was “originally a legal term referring generally to the act of valuable property being taken into custody by an agent of the court and locked away for safekeeping, usually to prevent the property from being disposed of or abused before a dispute over its ownership can be resolved.” Nowadays the term has been high jacked by congress to mean a certain type of financial policy. “If congress cannot agree on ways to cut back the total (or does not pass a new, higher Budget Resolution), then an "automatic" form of spending cutback takes place. This automatic spending cut is what is called sequestration" Johnson says.

Suddenly in March of 2013, only 3 months into the New Year – all hell (fiscally speaking) has suddenly broken loose. Has US President Barack Obama put the ball in the court of Congressional Republicans, or is it the other way around? No one seems to know. “I don’t know whether it’s going to hurt the economy or not” says House Speaker John Boehner R-Ohio in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press about sequestration 2013. GOP members of Congress have indicated that they’d be open to granting the Obama administration flexibility in choosing what to save and what to cut. President Obama however has maintained that he does not want to be made the sole decision maker of difficult or painful budget cuts.

The problem with a potential automatic form of spending cutback (or any cutback for that matter) is that nobody wins in the end. Services that are already flesh wounds get cut to the bone, and agencies that are underfunded fall by the wayside. The people who often work with the least end up getting cut into the most. These potential automatic federal budget cuts would affect among other things social service programs, and education. It remains to be seen what specific effects the sequestration would have on Buffalo NY, but it doesn’t take a mind reader to figure out that it wouldn’t be good.

When big corporations don’t pay their fair share the pie is undone. Would you eat a cherry or an apple pie with just the filling and not the crust? It’s not a pie then, is it? Now add to our revenue crisis, a budget crisis, and a sequestration, what do we do now?

Plain faced wickedness, political gamesmanship, or a sincere gentlemen’s disagreement – whatever it is we have to figure something out quick.

PS. You can check out this link to see who pays the price for these cuts and to take action against them.

National People's Action, or NPA is a national organization made up of many community based groups. NPA is dedicated to creating an organized response at the grassroots level to many of the issues facing regular Americans. These are people who don't have the deep pockets, or the connections to make things (specifically legal and policy changes) happen quickly.

PUSH Buffalo as many may know is a member organization of NPA.

On November 15-17th 2012, NPA held their annual Organizer's Conference. It was held in the "New York City of the Midwest", or Chicago Illinois. Chicago for those who don't know has a long, and rich history with organizing. Whether union, or community based this city has long been a central battleground for regular people banding together to collectively stand up for their rights.

NPA has this conference once a year, but this was my first time attending. I figured it would be like other NPA conferences, and national actions that I have attended in the past. I was about half right. As usual we were treated to take part in a "action" as organizers like to say outside of Senator Dick Durbin's Chicago office. Hundreds of people outside of his office peacefully banding together to get his attention, and some willing participants (who were willing and had been trained before hand) made it inside the lobby and were arrested. The action garnered local/national press, and grabbed the Senator's attention. There is nothing new here, but the action was set up like a depression era soup line with period looking shanties, and everything else included.

Two highlights of the conference that stand out in my mind are the different issues that groups across the country are working on, and a panel discussion that featured Congressman Keith Ellison of Minnesota.

They say that all politics is local, and this statement was never more true at this conference. VOCAL NY down in New York City is working on "Stop and Frisk", and on Medical Marijuana legislation, Take Action Minnesota has just beat a proposed voter ID restriction bill in that state, many groups in the Midwest, and out West are battling ant-immigration issues. Groups in Detroit Michigan are contending with of course housing issues. Keith Ellison's visit by far surprised me. Many say that compared to his colleagues in Washington he is pretty radical. I thought to myself "yeah right", but to my surprise he had some pretty interesting insights. He said "Washington can be like crack" or in other words as he broke it down later - a politician who stays in Washington DC around power, or influence long enough disconnected from the people who don't have the resources to fight on a large scale will become addicted to the power and the influence of Washington DC. He went on to give advice to organizers as how to keep their elected officials close to the common man on the street.

I am sometimes usually skeptical about events like this one, but from the opening session until the end I learned new information, connected with organizers doing similar things in other cities, and I came home empowered to continue doing my work.

Remember the Hip Hop you grew up listening to? You know music with a message? It seemed for a while to us-those of us from the "Boom Bap" era of the genre, that Hip Hop went missing, it's image was placed on a milk carton. Well I have an announcement to make, real Hip Hop has been sighted in Buffalo NY.

"No Heat" a new track produced by the National Fuel Accountability Coalition, is the theme song for the National Fuel Accountability Coalition's (of which PUSH Buffalo is a part of) Weatherization Campaign. "No Heat" explores the frustrations of the working poor in dealing with utility shutoffs in the winter (particularly gas, and lights) in Buffalo NY. Many people in the Buffalo area live in older, drafty housing. Quality, affordable weatherization would make the difference for not only many Buffalo area residents, but also for people living all throughout the State of New York!

You can catch the song being performed live on Monday November 19, 2012 10am-2pm in downtown Buffalo, more info here

The hip hop MC Nas famously said, “Hip hop is dead.” To paraphrase him, many of us believe that “voting is dead.”

While the Caravan of Corruption recently came to town, corruption in politics is nothing new in this country, and it’s certainly not anything that’s exclusive to New York State. Every state in the union has its own cast of political carnival characters. It’s like a new teen music sensation – once the fans get tired of them, they become played out.

Living in this country, many of us have grown accustomed to living a certain type of life. You wake up in the morning to get your son or daughter ready for school. You reach in the cabinet to get some Fruit Loops for yourself, and some oatmeal for your child. After putting your child on a bus for school, you have your coffee and bagel while reading the paper, saying things like, “Ooh wow…that’s crazy…how interesting…how terrible…he’s nuts.”You head to work saying to yourself, “Only eight hours to go, baby – when I get off I’m going to grab a Bud Light.”

Living in the United States, one of the world’s most powerful, wealthiest, and blessed nations, can make some of us take things for granted. We may think that because something is, that it always was. Although you put your child on that bus for school this morning, at some point in history there was such a thing as child labor in this country. This meant that instead of going to public school, young children were working long work days as if they were adults. Somebody back then voted to change that!

You only have to work eight hours today, unless you agree to do some overtime. No one can force you to work all day in order to keep your job. This wasn’t always the case, but somebody back then voted to change that. Bud Light wasn’t always legal in this country; we have a sordid past called “Prohibition” and somebody back then voted to change that.

For the last two and a half centuries, successive generations of Americans voted in some way or another to create the type of life we have here today. On a worldwide scale, the presidential election of the United States ranks as the Super Bowl of elections; the whole world is literally watching.Whether you’re rooting for team Romney or team Obama, what our future looks like depends on which way we vote on Tuesday.

Power equals one man/woman, to one vote. Whether you want to rock the vote, rap the vote, rockabilly the vote, or conserve the vote, just go out and vote!

· Do you want to increase your opportunity for employment?
· Do you want to make your community more energy efficient?
· Are you an experienced and/or trained construction worker?
· Maybe you have no experience in construction?
· Do you want to become a certified Green and Healthy Homes worker?

Then the time to act is now!

PUSH Buffalo and, PUSH Green want you! It breaks down like this: A statewide coalition that PUSH Buffalo helped lead (Green Jobs, Green New York, GJGNY) wins a big victory in 2009, and then another in 2011. These victories are two different, but important bills that got passed in Albany. PUSH Green is then created to connect homeowners to energy efficiency, and to connect workers to energy efficiency jobs.

We have a free weatherization community training that we have a few spaces for. This training is in response to our federally funded Weatherization Assistance Program, or WAP special project. This means that we have funding to weatherize approximately 90-100 homes in the city of Buffalo. This training potentially connects community members to this work.

We have a few spaces remaining in our free weatherization community training, but time is running out. Anyone that’s interested in this potential opportunity should call 716-884-0356. You can also stop by the PUSH Buffalo office at 271 Grant St in Buffalo.

Over the last few years, there has been a huge push for everyone to go green. With promises of reducing your carbon footprint, lowering your heating and cooling bills and creating local jobs, the possibilities of “going green” and creating a more sustainable economy are endless.

Earlier this summer, however, someone brought to my attention that most Buffalonians probably don’t know about the current green programs that New York State has to offer…or how they even work for that matter.

Since PUSH Buffalo is so heavily involved in advocacy and organizing work – work that pertains directly to low-income weatherization and the building up of more sustainable communities - what often gets lost in all of the commotion is “the what” behind our advocating and organizing efforts. What values do are efforts bring to our neighborhoods and how do we turn public policy work into actual boots on the ground?

"How Green Works For Me" is a series of articles that discuss exactly which green programs are available for homeowners here in New York State. One of those “green” programs is NYSERDA’s Green Jobs – Green New York Program, or as we like to call it here at PUSH, PUSH Green.

By now, I am guessing that you are wondering what Green Jobs – Green New York and PUSH Green are and who NYSERDA is?

Well, let me feel you in.

First of all, when I say "green," I am referring to energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. Therefore, something being “green,” means that the methods (or practices) used work to save homeowners money on their utility bills and that the materials used will not destroy the environment.

Make sense? Okay – great. Let’s move on.

Who is NYSERDA?

NYSERDA or The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, is a public benefit corporation that was created in the 1975 to help New York reduce energy consumption, promote the use of renewable energy sources and protect the environment.

As a public corporation of the state, NYSERDA is basically charged with researching and implementing new utility cost savings, and environmentally friendly practices. These practices include new ways of building, or retrofitting residential and commercial buildings in New York State to become more energy efficient.

The Green Jobs – Green New York program is a statewide initiative, administered by NYSERDA, that is designed to promote energy efficiency and the installation of clean technologies to reduce homeowners’ energy costs and the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. The program, which supports sustainable community development and green jobs creation, is based on the Green Jobs – Green New York Act that was signed into law in 2009.

So, what does this mean for New York State and Buffalo?

In 2009, after working with the Center for Working Families, NYSERDA, several community-based organizations, including PUSH Buffalo, and state green job training providers, Governor David Paterson signed the Green Jobs – Green New York Act into law.

In January 2012, PUSH Buffalo launched their new energy-efficiency program, PUSH Green, to improve our communities through energy efficiency and to help Erie County homeowners reduce their energy usage and lower their heating and cooling bills.

To help the State reach their energy efficiency goals, PUSH Green is directly working with NYSERDA as an independent outreach contractor to create living-wage jobs and to help homeowners reduce their high energy bills.

PUSH Green provides Erie County homeowners with access to free (yes, I said free) comprehensive home energy assessments, whole house installation services, affordable, On-Bill financing, and, most importantly, green jobs opportunities.

“PUSH Green is more than just a new energy efficiency program,” states Eric Walker, PUSH Green director. “Our program tackles the urgent question: How do we create a green economy that is not only responsive to the needs of local communities but can also empower them to work together to solve economic and environmental crises?”

“At PUSH Green, we encourage homeowners to invest in the safety, comfort and durability of their homes while creating living wage jobs for everyone,” continued Walker. “Through these actions, we can achieve triple bottom line results - equitable growth, environmental conservation, and sustainable communities.”

So, how will PUSH Green achieve these “triple bottom line” results?

The PUSH Green Friends and Neighbors Program is designed to make a bigger impact on homes and communities by scaling up work in the energy efficiency sector.

The Friends and Neighbors Program works when five (or more) homeowners agree to use the same contractor (or contractor team) to perform their free comprehensive home energy assessments and energy efficiency upgrades.

To date, PUSH Green has negotiated discounted pricing with eight contractors for their Friends and Neighbors participants. The discounts are guaranteed when three customers in their bundle sign contracts to have energy efficiency measures installed in their homes. Homeowners who bundle with more than five of their friends or neighbors will receive even more discounts.

Contractors who participate in PUSH Green’s Friends and Neighbors Program are required to sign upfront commitments with NYSERDA to hire local residents, pay family sustaining wages and health benefits to workers, ensure new and existing workers are trained and qualified, and partner with women and minority-owned businesses.

So, in sum: more work for local businesses, more energy reduction, more savings for homeowners, and more green jobs. Sounds like an all-around win-win-win!

Over the next few months, homeowners can expect to see PUSH Green’s Community Energy Advocates, certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI), out in neighborhoods throughout Erie County, talking to homeowners about the program and how they can get involved.

As a first step, PUSH Green will work with homeowners to see if they qualify for one of those free home energy assessments I mentioned earlier and to enroll them in the Friends and Neighbors Program.

“We are advocates for the homeowners,” says Kate Howard, PUSH Green program manager. “If homeowners have questions, then we are here to help answer them and point them in the right direction.”

So, friends, if you are ready to improve your community through energy efficiency, you might want to give this green team a call…like now. The number is 716-886-1780…or you can check them out online, here.

If you didn’t know who Nate Buckley was before, you definitely will now.

A little history:

In late 2010, while attending an anti-war demonstration downtown, a demonstration hosted by grassroots organization, United Coalitions Against War, Buckley was arrested. The group was bringing attention to the United State's involvement in several wars taking place all over the globe. The demonstrators visited several downtown sites that included City Hall, the local Federal building and M&T Bank.

Buckley, along with several others, were simply exercising their first amendment right to assemble peacefully. However, local bystanders and members of the Niagara Frontier Transit Authority (NFTA) police department did not see their “simple” act of organizing outside of the bank as peaceful. NFTA police ended up arresting Buckley and the rest of the organizers and charged them with the “act inciting a riot.”

Nate Buckley, for those of you who don’t know, is the co-proprietor of Burning Books Buffalo, a local book store located on Connecticut Street that specializes in literature and events related to social justice movements, radical environmentalism and freedom struggles. He and his father are also PUSH Buffalo members and have been huge supporters of our organization since the beginning.

We caught up with Buckley and his father to shed some light on how his case is going. In this candid interview, Buckley and his father discuss a few of their “freedom adventures” as well as what Buckley calls his “supreme right” to assemble, peacefully, in the city that he calls home.

“I feel as if my right to assemble is under attack and, for me, that’s a real problem,” stated Buckley.

Unfortunately, Nate is still being ping ponged through the Buffalo court system because of this incident. Since his arrest, friends have been raising money to help him with his high legal fees.

Nate and his friends, aka the Nate Buckley Defense Commitee, will be holding a “Pie for the People Fundraiser” tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sol Rise Farm and Cultural Arts Center, at 226 E. Utica St.

Hope to see everyone there!

Growing up in Buffalo, people would always say things like, “our city is such a brain drain,” that "there's nothing to do here” and that "the politicians have all the money". Some would moan about the crime, others would cite a multitude of other issues, whatever the gripe, people talked. Hearing the negative talk, I too sang along with the chorus of folks who sang the "I can't wait to get up on outta here” song.

But, Buffalo is a small city with big dreams.

Being an astute observer and being able to travel to other cities, the one thing that remains visibly clear is that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. There's nothing like a change in environment to appreciate what you have. Yes, there are some cities that might be more "poppin" than Buffalo, but this primarily depends on what one considers to be "poppin’.” And, while there are plenty of things to do in much larger cities, like Boston or D.C., I discovered that in order to partake in those “poppin’” things, you have to have money.

You may have found that dream job, the one in the 6-figure range, but something is still missing in your heart. You haven't seen your family in years. Everything in your new city is nice and new, but you have to spend most of your week inside of your car. You also can't get into that fancy restaurant or bar because they're crowded all of the time. And, to make matters worse, that front yard with the spacious sidewalks that you used to have...gone.

But, fear not...Buffalo is on the rise.

Based on recent Census data that appeared in a Buffalo News article a few weeks ago, there a several Buffalo neighborhoods that are continuously growing. The Grant Ferry corridor on the West Side was mentioned as one of these areas as well as the Black Rock/Riverside area.

So, what caused this rise in population?

The numerous refugees that have resettled in these areas. The article, which featured a Burmese family that had opened a restaurant on Niagara Street, uplifts their amazing story about why they came to”brain drain” Buffalo and opened their new restaurant. (I guess it goes to show you that another person’s trash is another person’s golden opportunity...something to think about when you are itching to, “get up outta here.”)

But, what are you really doing here? Are you in the game or just a spectator?

At some point you have to roll your sleeves up and get down to business. If there's nothing to do, what are you going to do about it? If the politicians have all the money, what are you going to do about it? If the rate of crime is rising, what are you going to do about it? If your gas bills are too high, what are you going to do about it? If there are no jobs, what are you going to do about it?

Hey it's a dirty job but somebody has to do it. We all have our part to play and some of us just haven't figured out what our roles are yet. Appreciate what you have, but more importantly make some noise in the areas that need it. I know that there may be people reading this who are already making things happen in our city. Keep doing what you're doing; I promise you, whether you realize it or not, your hard work will pay off.

It's time for all of us to put our heads together, to figure out how to plug this “brain drain.”

Rodney Lee interned at PUSH through the Liberty Partnership Program at the University at Buffalo during the summer of 2012. The following are Lee’s reflections of his time at PUSH.

PUSH Buffalo is a non-profit organization that fights for sustainable housing for low-income families on Buffalo’s West Side. They fight to better and bring West Side community residents and homeowners together.

When I first started interning with PUSH everyone welcomed me with warm, open arms. During my time working with PUSH I went on many tours and got to meet a lot of new and interesting people. Sara Gordon, PUSH community organizer, one of my supervisors was very nice and fun to be around. Sara showed me what her job as a Community Organizer looked like and how her work as an organizer truly helped PUSH:

Britney McClain, PUSH development director, took me on tours of PUSH’s Green Development Zone where she showed me the houses they are working on and all of the beautiful community gardens that have been created to help bring the neighborhood together.

I have learned many amazing things during my internship at PUSH. One of the things that I learned the most about dealt with an issue called fracking. Fracking is when people – mainly large gas and energy companies – dig into the earth’s crust and blast water and other material into the ground to get gas. Fracking is bad because it contaminates the water we drink.

Gas companies ignore the fact that fracking contaminates our water and wind up doing nothing about it. So, PUSH took it upon themselves to set up a meeting with National Fuel CEO, David Smith, to address this problem. To date, Smith has refused to meet with them.

As I leave PUSH, I will take all of the knowledge about the world and what’s shaping in it with me as I move into the future.

Thanks PUSH!

Theater is one of the oldest forms of art. Back in the day, most theatrical performances were very simple. They usually consisted of one person – the protagonist (the main character) – and the audience. As time went on, more roles were added, including the birth of the antagonist – i.e the bad guy.

The costs of these first performances were sponsored by wealthy donors. In some instances – ancient Greece, for example – theater was a way for sponsors to get into politics, or at the very least a way to influence policy.

Activism is the art of using various campaigning strategies to create change. History is littered with people who, intentionally or not, used campaign strategies to spark change in their surroundings. Some people have even combined the two elements of activist theater to incite change and move the world into a better place.

When German Monk Martin Luther famously nailed his 95 Theses onto a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, his act heavily influenced the Protestant Reformation. Luther showed the world that a bit of theatrical flair could launch a whole new movement – a movement that spread like wildfire across Europe.

Theater and activism are like fraternal twins. They are not physically identical, but they are still the same.

As part of the Buffalo Infringement Festival, a festival that showcases “underground art” that might not make it onto a Broadway stage or a famous museum like The MMoA, PUSH Buffalo and the National Fuel Accountability Coalition have produced a series of short, activist-style performances called, “If it don’t make dollars, It don’t make cents: A conversation with the 1%.”

We had heard about the festival for quite some time. It wasn’t until this past spring that our spider senses started to tingle and we made the connection between the festival’s mission and ours. While we were not created to address the same things “issues,” we both seek to bring about change – change in the fundamental way people see things.

Below are the dates of our upcoming performances. We won’t give you a list of the characters and actors; you’ll have to come to one of the shows to see for yourself.

July 28: 5 pm – 5:30 pm
Aug. 1: 4 pm – 4:30 pm
Aug. 2: 6 pm – 6:30 pm
Aug. 4: 5 pm – 5:30 pm, and 8:30 pm - 9pm

All performances are free and will take place at Burning Books Buffalo, located at 420 Connecticut St. Hope to see everyone there.

This is just a friendly reminder to stand up for your rights.

People always ask members of our organization why we protest and attend so many public demonstrations.

Change never occurred without some form of action or confrontation. I don’t know about you, but I did pretty well in social studies and world history classes. Whether it was the French, American, Bolshevik, or Industrial Revolution, or the numerous civil wars that have taken place over the years, change never really comes about in a smooth way. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the reasons for change, people decided that they didn’t like something and they said, “A change is gonna come.”

Government, as it exists today, is based on the premise that those in power “work” for the betterment of all individuals within our society. The writers of the U.S. Constitution came to together to solidify a burgeoning nation and set it in motion. They cleverly crafted a document that was, for all intents and purposes, pretty straightforward.

Our Founding Fathers understood human nature – after all, they were students of world history. They knew the world would change. They knew that, over time, no one person or group would ever stay the same. Views on slavery, women’s rights, and things not yet conceived would change as both the nation and people changed. They tried their best to build provisions into this document that would allow for change, but to also avoid the prospect of absolutely destroying what was created in the beginning.

The founders understood that money talks and that too much of anything can make a person go either way. Money and power are no exceptions to this rule. At times, they can act like an addictive drug, exuding power over the one in “control.”

Our Founding Fathers knew that if the balance of power (in government) tipped too much in the wrong direction, then the masses would need to have some options to help tip it – the power – back. In a capitalist society in which money can buy you anything, including love and a political office, the right of the people to organize (or protest) is key.

The concept of people coming together out a perceived “wrong” has been running through my mind since I took part in the recent, peaceful, picket outside of National Fuel Gas on Wednesday. I believe Nate Buckley said it best when he asked, “Why are we out here? What would make someone want to demonstrate or protest? What are people thinking when they pass us by?”

People don’t have to protest every hour of every day of every week, but it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye on current events. I think of it like this: for every moment you spend living your life, there is someone out there working overtime to feed their latest fix for money or power. They’ll work extremely hard for their “fix,” and they won’t think twice about harming someone in the process. Even drug addicts need some type of counseling or rehab, right? You know, that dose of reality that will wake them the heck up and help get them off drugs.

Well, this is what a peaceful demonstration will do.

Whatever your issue – preservation, low-income weatherization, fracking, police brutality, prisoner’s rights, anti-war efforts, crime, education, or sustainability, change won’t come until you get up and go do something about it…peacefully, that is!

Wednesday was the Fourth of July. After sleeping for most of the day, I decided to ride my bike through the hood to see what was good. After all, it was the Fourth, and somebody should be barbequing, right?

The Fourth on the West Side of Buffalo is crazy. Every block held a mini- Independence Day fireworks session. The smell of gunpowder and smoke filled the air and the only thing you could hear was the sound of fireworks. As I rode around, the one thing that jumped out at me was the sight of a family in one of PUSH’s community gardens.

The family looked so proud of their growing garden. And while I couldn’t tell what they were growing (the plants were really tall though), their smiles were all I needed to see, to know that they were truly happy.

This “love scene” was observed at the new PUSH Buffalo Community Garden located on 14th Street near Rhode Island. This area of land began as an empty field before being developed into five houses. Over the years, the houses disintegrated and became unoccupied, eventually becoming vacant lots.

The idea of transforming a vacant urban lot into a community garden is not new, nor is PUSH Buffalo the first group to do this. Other groups, like the Massachusetts Avenue Project, Grassroots Gardens, and several private citizens have been turning vacant lots into gardens for many years.

In fact, several cities outside of the Buffalo area have been transforming vacant spaces into gardens – gardens that have become big hits in their communities. In places like Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, Newark, and New York City, people have figured out that community gardens are important pieces of their community’s sustainability and revitalization.

PUSH Buffalo has strongly advocated sustainable living since the beginning. Sustainability as it relates to our society is simply the cleanest (less taxing on the human body and environment), most economical (makes good financial sense for society as a whole), most efficient (makes the most logical use of environmental, financial, and human resources), and most humane means of building a strong community.

The creation of a community garden (especially in an urban area) is a no-brainer. Many neighborhoods in urban cities like Buffalo suffer from vacant land and poor housing conditions. In these same areas, residents have limited access to fresh food options. Activate the sustainability drive, and all of a sudden several vacant areas become beautiful community assets where residents can grow food that their friends and families can enjoy.

I remember when I first started at PUSH Buffalo, I thought everyone was a little crazy. I wondered what the hell sustainability was and why they kept talking about it? The sight of that family in the community garden makes it very clear for me now, and with the creation of each new garden the picture becomes clearer and clearer.

Staying true to our mission of helping to show what sustainability is, we have a couple gardens that have blossomed up in the neighborhood that include: Hampshire Street near 15th Street, 14th Street near Rhode Island, Winter Street, and 15th Street and W. Utica Street. There are some other gardens in the works. If you’re not too busy this summer, stop by and take a look at one or all of them.

Who knows – you might fall in love with the neighborhood all over again.

Stop the Violence Community Luau

<itunes:author>Lonnie Barlow </itunes:author>

Tomorrow PUSH Buffalo will throw a small celebration at the Massachusetts Avenue Park to keep the peace and kick off the start to the summer. Well, actually, now that I think about it, our celebration will be more than just some small party; we'll be gathering for a commencement of sorts to come together in harmony.

Not too long ago PUSH Buffalo helped transform a park on the West Side of Buffalo. The park in question was the Mass Ave Park (Massachusetts Avenue Park) located on Massachusetts Avenue between Lawrence Place and Winter Street. Years of neglect did not make the park the most inviting public space in the community. Neighbors had concerns about the lighting, liter, unscrupulous activities, and safety.

Members of PUSH who lived in the parks vicinity suggested that we do something to help immediately. The community could not afford to have a public space that big in their own back yard disintegrate into dust. Our members knew that the park could be brought back to life so that future generations of parents and youth could make use of the space. To date, youth living in the surrounding area have only ever heard about the park's “glory days.” Because of the work of our dedicated staff, members and community leaders, our youth can now experience all that the park has to offer (and will offer) for themselves; not the other way around.

A few preliminary planning sessions and several meetings later here we are. The Mass Ave Park is reborn. On Friday, June 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., PUSH will hold our “Stop the Violence Community Luau” to celebrate in grand fashion all of the hard work that our community members and leaders – thank you Councilman David Rivera and Mayor Byron Brown – have put into reviving this historic space. Join us as we show people what great organizing and real power look like.

Our “Stop the Violence Community Luau” will also address the rash of violence that our community has experienced toward the end of May. Now, I don't know if it had anything to do with drugs, a gang dispute or because we had a few days of hot weather, but our neighborhood suffered great losses – losses that we don’t want to experience again this summer.

So, we’re speaking out and taking a more proactive approach. At the end of May, members of the community held a candle light vigil in remembrance of Jay Nieves who sadly went on to a more beautiful place a year ago. His family and friends decided that his legacy needed to be lifted up for those who use violence as a way to solve their problems. No one’s life should be taken in vain; there are better ways to solve your problems and Nieves friends and family agree.

Inspired by the vigil, the "Stop the Violence Community Luau" was conceived as a way to officially coronet the newly rehabbed park and shed light on a much bigger scourge facing the community. The Luau will feature great music from TNT Productions, games for the whole family and awesome barbecue. Just as community leaders stepped up to save a park from oblivion, we must step up to save our young men and women from senseless actions of violence.

What good is a brand new park in an area that still deals with issues of violence? Join us on Friday June 22, (@ 5pm) as we celebrate family, friends, our children, and our future. "It takes a whole village to raise a child” and we look forward to seeing you there!

PUSH Goes to Washington with National People’s Action

<itunes:author />

PUSH Buffalo recently took a trip to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

National monuments and the White House notwithstanding, it was definitely quite the eventful trip. A tired group of 60 early risers boarded a chartered bus on the morning of May 19th, with no idea of what was in store for us in the next three days. If any in our group had advance knowledge about some of the things that were about to transpire, like Nicolas Cage did in “Knowing,” then some of us no doubt would’ve had reservations about the trip. These reservations, though, would have been for all the right reasons.

So, for an eventful three days, where do we begin?

First off, after about three hours on the road, our bus stops at a Wegmans grocery store (thank God for Wegmans) in the quaint little town of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. We thought we’d be stopping for a rest and a bite to eat – unbeknownst to us, we were in store for much more. Getting off of the bus, I notice that it actually turned out to be a relatively nice day; it was sunny and hot. After going into the grocery store to use the restroom facilities and grab some lunch, we were informed by Gus our bus driver that the bus’ air conditioning unit had stopped working. There was also a problem with the transmission. This is no dis to Gus and Grand Tours of Lockport, NY, because things do happen. Gus and Grand Tours both rock, as you shall see in a minute.

We ended up enjoying some sun while waiting for another bus. We had ourselves a nice little picnic on the Wegmans grass with food provided courtesy of Gus. After only about a two-hour delay we are eventually back on our way. All through the bus ride from beginning to end (and even on the way back to Buffalo), Gus was the consummate down-to-earth professional keeping us informed and entertained.

Word was sent to the folks at NPA (National People’s Action) that we would be behind schedule. This meant that we would be missing some of the day’s activities taking place in DC. They understood and they later placed us on speaker phone for a group shout out during a pep rally that was happening in DC.

Secondly, for those who thought that what happened to Trayvon Martin was an isolated incident, check this out – when we arrived in Washington, we were told that a man (a black male) from an organization in New York City (G.O.L.E.S or Good Old Lower East Side), Nehemiah Wilson, was profiled and wrongfully arrested. Apparently, DC Metropolitan Police saw him getting off of his group’s bus at the hotel entrance for check-in. They mistook him for someone much shorter than he was. He was dragged from inside the hotel, pepper-sprayed, roughed up, and later charged with resisting arrest. This incident took place before any of the scheduled non-violent demonstrations ever happened. My God, man, was this a sign of more things to come? What else was in store for us? More on this later…

We went to DC to take part in NPA’s annual conference. NPA has been one of the organizations nationally that have been leading the charge against big corporate corruption. They have been specifically taking aim at big banks that have enriched themselves at the expense of the poor and working class. Visits were paid to U.S. Secretary of Treasury Tim Geithner, Peter Scher (an executive with JP Morgan Chase Bank), and Ed Demarco (acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and overseer of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), all of whom have homes in the Washington, DC, area.

Like many of the previous non-violent NPA demonstrations, a crowd of a thousand people or more converged on the doorsteps of these men, unannounced. Testimonies were given and proclamations declared. The point was made that America wants an investigation into the 2008 financial crisis, a financial transfer tax on multi-million dollar transactions, and bankers to step down from regulatory bodies that are supposed to regulate the banking industry.

Going back to Nehemiah for a second, a rally was held in his honor outside the Metropolitan Police headquarters in DC. Before I proceed further, it must be mentioned that this was an unplanned event. Organizers from different NPA affiliated groups including PUSH Buffalo literally put this event together overnight. A petition was put together shortly after his arrest and hundreds of signatures were received in his defense.

Nehemiah gave a fiery and impassioned speech in front of Metropolitan Police headquarters. A powerful spoken word poem was read. Cariol Horne of PUSH Buffalo also spoke. For those not in the know, Cariol is the ex-Buffalo Police officer who was fired in 2008 for having the guts to stop one of her fellow officers from exercising police brutality on an already restrained man back here in Buffalo.

After the rally, the large crowd marched across the street to the district attorney’s office to hand over the petitions and demand that the bogus charges against Nehemiah be immediately dropped. After about ten minutes, someone from the DA’s office came out and received the signatures.

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you that PUSH Buffalo won an award from NPA for the member organization who brought the most people to the conference.

I told you that we had no idea of what was in store for us. We went to DC to try and stop government officials from giving away the store to big banks, to store more away for the poor and working class. In the process, we ended up keeping police from storing one of our own inside a jail. But, we made it back in one piece and the world just might be closer to being that much better after what we did.

So I guess it was all meant to be.

It has been said that if you build it they will come. Build a home and eventually someone will be clamoring to live there. Build a shed and eventually your lawnmower and garden tools will may their way inside. Build a school and eventually children will come to learn. Build a wellness facility in the neighborhood and eventually people will use it to exercise.
If people like the work that PUSH Buffalo has been doing, then it is only right for us to give props to an organization that has been fighting the good fight in Buffalo longer than we have. In the mid-1960's organizers of B.U.I.L.D – Build Unity, Independence, Liberty, and Dignity – decided that they didn't like how things were shaping up in their neighborhood. So, instead of letting someone else come in and make all of the decisions for their community, they organized and took matters into their own hands. Because of their hard work and tenacity, the organization founded both the B.U.I.L.D. Academy, located on Buffalo's East Side, and the now infamous Juneteenth Festival.
B.U.I.L.D, which was created out of a growing need in Buffalo's African American community for community-based leadership, lives by the motto of helping others by first helping themselves - the idea being that you can’t help others work on themselves until you work on building yourself up first. The organization’s mission, the empowerment and self-determination of the Black community and other communities through a unified collective struggle against the systematic problems that tear our community apart, is evident in everything that they do.
On Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 B.U.I.L.D will hold their 18th Annual Conference at 118 E. Utica St. in Buffalo at the Friends to the Elderly Center. This year’s theme is “Closing the Gap: Healthcare is a Civil Right…Not a Privilege.” The conference, which will talk about Buffalo’s need for more affordable, quality healthcare options, will feature two keynote lectures from Dr. Kunle Odunsi of Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the University of Buffalo and LaVonne Ansari, Community Health Center of Buffalo director. (Click here for a complete schedule of the two-day conference.)
In the struggle against injustice we often overlook our peers, the organizations who are fighting the good fight to end social and economic injustice here in Buffalo. It’s a wonderful thing when similar groups can come together on the issues that affect the community as a whole. Paraphrasing Deuteronomy 32:30, “one can chase a thousand, but two can chase ten thousand.” Our strength is in building unity among ourselves.
For those interested in joining or following the activities of B.U.I.L.D, the organization holds weekly meetings every Thursday at 5 p.m. Call 716.885.001 or visit them online, at www.buildofbuffalo.org for more information.

Over the years, Buffalo has become home to many European ethnic groups looking to start a new life; African Americans migrating from the South looking for work opportunities; or Hispanics who migrated here in hopes of obtaining the good ol’ fashion “American Dream.” Like those before them and those to come, Buffalo has remained a place to come and build a new life.

Since 2003, the “Taste of Diversity Festival” has showcased our city’s diverse culture. Ethnic foods, arts, crafts, clothing, and music have been a mainstay of the festival since its inception and with each passing year the event has gotten bigger and better. This year organizers have gone the extra mile to weave Grant Street businesses into the fabric of the festival.

In the past, the festival was held exclusively on Lafayette Avenue. This year, by popular demand, the festival will take place at the intersection of Grant Street and Lafayette Avenue. The move puts the festival in the heart of Buffalo's most ethnically diverse community as well as one of the city’s most recognizable business districts on the West Side.

Organizers hope that this year will be the beginning of bigger (and brighter) things to come. The festival, set to feature Middle Eastern Belly Dancing and free hand henna tattoo artistry, will also sell food from a variety of ethnic groups like Ethiopia, the Caribbean Islands and Asia. And, for those interested in learning how to make these exotic dishes at home, festival organizers will provide guests with a “Taste of Diversity Cookbook” upon a $2 donation. The cookbook will also be made available at 205 Grant Street’s local bookstore, Westside Stories.

Despite what the naysayers have to say, diversity, at its core is a good thing. Many companies spend thousands of dollars trying to diversify their workforce and teach their employers how to be more culturally sensitive. Many school districts around the country could only hope and wish for the ethnic diversity so commonly found in Buffalo's neighborhoods. With a festival dedicated to showcasing diversity, Buffalonians should come out to support an event that exhibits what we sometimes take for granted.

The Taste of Diversity Festival will take place this Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Grant Street. For more information about the Taste of Diversity Festival, visit them online at www.TasteofDiversity.org

With the director of “Gas Land” getting arrested not too long ago, this “questionable practice” used by big energy companies to drill for natural gas is now in the limelight…and not in a good way.

Hydro fracking's advocates say that despite the negative environmental effects it does benefit society and has been touted as a potential jobs generator in some communities. According to advocates, hydro fracking for domestic natural gas would also lessen the country's dependence on foreign energy, which is great - but at what cost?

For the uninformed, let me press the rewind button and catch you up on the whole hydrofracking issue.

There is a great big gigantic piece of prehistoric rock known as the Marcellus Shale, that is located deep under ground in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. Big energy companies have discovered that just beneath and around this rock exist sizable deposits of natural gas and, naturally, these companies saw huge money making opportunities.

Hydraulic fracturing was developed and determined by these companies as the best drilling practice to mine this domestic source of natural gas. The drilling process involves the use of hydraulic pressure mixed with deadly gases injected into the ground to break up the Marcellus Shale rock. Once this rock is broken up, energy companies can easily access the natural gas deposits.

One of the major issues with hydrofracking is that it contaminates our water supply. Even though most fracking rigs are located in or near rural communities this environmental danger is something that effects people in different dwellings. Just ask the State of Pennsylvania where fracking is legal and large gas corporations, like National Fuel Gas, have been openly engaging in this harmful process.

The city of Pittsburgh (you know where the Steelers and Penguins play) banned the practice in 2010, but their drinking water was still contaminated. Frack water runoff made it impossible for residents to bathe or drink properly for months. People living near or in the city of Pittsburgh were advised to drink bottled water and to bathe in short intervals.

In New York the decision to allow hydrofracking is still up in the air. That's why people in several communities across the state thought it high time to conduct “A People's Hearing on Fracking”. This event, scheduled for Saturday, June 2, at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, will begin at 10 a.m. The “Hearing” will feature speakers, art and music to illustrate hydrofracking's dangers. Guest speakers from many backgrounds will speak about hydrofracking's unfriendly intrusion into our environment. California environmentalist Ruth Breech, Sara Buckley from Western New York Drilling Defense, Rita Yelda of Food and Water Watch, Dr. Jill Kriesky of the University of Pittsburgh, Bruce Fisher of Buffalo State College, and the attorney for the Onondaga Nation Joseph Heath are set to speak at Saturday’s “Hearing.”

No one likes to be put on the spot, but New York State it looks like you are. When big energy company's decided to push for hydrofracking in our state they not only put us on the spot; they put us in danger. When big energy company's decided that bigger profits for the 1 percent where more desirable than protecting precious resources like water that we the 99 percent need to survive, they put us on the spot. No one likes being put on the spot but they've marked the spot on New York and they plan on digging for gold no matter what the cost…and that ain’t right. So, see you there!

I really shouldn't be talking about it, much less writing about it right now but I feel as though I should.

I was afraid. I felt as if my life was on the line.

So, who caused me such strife? Well, it wasn't the Mafia or the KGB. You're getting cold. The Latin King's, the Black Gangster's Disciples? No not them either. The Bloods or The Crips? You're getting colder. It was my bank.

True story.

I recently received an e-mail from my bank telling me that my account was $60 in the red. Apparently there was an automatic charge deducted from my checking account from some company that I purchased software from two years ago. I had no idea that once the two-year agreement was up, this un-named software company would automatically debit my account for another subscription. I was charged an insufficient funds fee as well as an overdraft fee of $30.

Okay, I can kind of understand that.

A week later, in the midst of trying to clear this up, I received another e-mail telling me that I was being charged another $30 overdraft fee. The reason they gave this time (truth be told I was so angry I can't really remember the reason they grabbed the extra $30) was something like, Oh, we noticed that your account was in the red with an overdraft charge. We decided that we could make your banking experience worse by taking another $30. But, if you bring your account out of the red, by Friday, then we will forget this ever happened.

Needless to say, I was not going to oblige and all in all I was charged about $100 in overdraft fees.

Maybe I should have had more of a cushion in case something like this happened. Maybe I should have moved all of my money into a credit union years ago.

But, being a little broke sometimes isn't a crime and I was planning on moving my funds to a credit union soon. To say this little incident hastened my planning process, would be like saying I would never be afraid of running up on a huge bear hiking.

Well, that's Bank of America (#BofA) for you and I guess I had to learn the hard way about how they get down.

That's why when I found out about Bank of Americas Shareholder Meeting Protests in Charlotte, I smiled. If they picked on little ole me, imagine what they were getting away with on a larger scale.

Last week, approximately 700 to 800 people visited the banks headquarters. Almost 100 of those protesting actually made it inside. The Bank vs. America demonstrators wanted to let Bank of Americas senior executives know that America wasn't too happy with them.

Demonstrators who made it inside introduced themselves as shareholders and issued resolutions to the rest of the bank. Outside people made a joyful noise against the bank's financing of unethical practices - practices that included environmentally unfriendly mining in the Appalachia region of the U.S., tax dodging schemes and the home foreclosure crisis.

A few PUSH Buffalo members who attended last weeks protest were able to get inside of the meeting and it was truly a sight to behold. Let's just say that between the chanting and the resolutions that were presented, the presence of the bank's victims was more than felt. After a while, Brian Moynihan, Bank of America CEO and meeting facilitator, began to take questions and inquiries from shareholders who were not seated with large groups of demonstrator shareholders.

While it was perfect, it was a start and thats all we were asking for a new beginning.

Organized by a super coalition called the 99% Power, the Bank vs. America demonstration was put together as a response to big banks refusal to play fair with their customers. The 99% Power includes community groups such as the National People's Action (NPA), PUSH Buffalo, SEIU, UNITE HERE, and USW.

To some, the disruption of a corporate shareholder's meeting might seem over the top. But unfortunately in a Flipper vs. Moby Dick type of struggle, Flipper may have to resort to these types of tactics to win. Nobody likes a loud spontaneous interruption but a loud spontaneous interruption with a dire purpose is exactly whats needed when you are trying to make a global change.

With the Senate’s blessing, in the blink of an eye, minimum wage could go from $7.25 an hour to about $8.50 an hour. And, while this might not seem like much, to a nation (and state) going through economic turmoil, it’s a lifeline.

I remember my grandfather telling me that by the time my generation comes of age, we will experience many problems unlike any other generation. They could have added him to the New Testament, because his words were prophetic. In his day, a person could walk right out of high school and find a great paying job. He told me of a time when, “All a man needed was two legs, two arms, and one eye to find work,” and an employment landscape in which, “You could quit one job and literally walk across the street to find another one that paid better” – and these weren’t $7 or $8 an hour gigs, either. These were jobs that paid well and included a full benefits and retirement package.

How times have changed.

For most Americans, these stories of “good jobs past” seem like fairy tales. Take the married woman who works two minimum (or below minimum) wage jobs just to pay the rent and a portion of her utilities. When you combine her pay with her husband’s, a man who is most likely working the same type of job, they will still barely have enough left over to pay for food, clothes or transportation.

Or, what about the recent college graduate who can’t find anything that pays enough for him to start his life? He is desperate and will most likely take any type of job, regardless of the pay. He has a life to live and college loans that accrue interest every minute of every day.

This is their reality.

Whenever talk of the golden era of the American worker comes up, you usually get stares of disbelief. People will even say things like, “Wow, really, unbelievable,” or, my personal favorite, “I wish we had jobs like those today.” For most Americans, the fairytale life of having a job that pays enough to survive sits right up there with tales like Snow White, the Frog Prince, or Rumpelstiltskin.

We are told that inflation is “natural,” and that it directly coincides with an average business cycle. I wonder why leading economists haven’t factored in a living rate of pay as being a natural part of the business cycle? Why aren’t people put first, instead of big businesses and money? A society in which the infrastructure for survival (i.e. a family sustaining, living wage job) is quickly imploding and will soon cease to exist.

You can blame the current situation on deregulation, the stock market, foreign labor, corporate greed or whatever else you’d like. But, people aren’t working. And, if they are then they are working for pretty much next to nothing.

So what’s next?

VOICE Buffalo, with help from us over at PUSH Buffalo, has been one of the organizations shedding light on the minimum wage issue for years. We are held a press conference at 65 Court St. in Downtown Buffalo this past Friday (May 11, 2012), and we went down the block to Buffalo City Hall (inside the Common Council Chambers) for a public hearing, from noon-4pm, to speak with state lawmakers on the current proposal to raise the state’s minimum wage.

And, while raising the state’s minimum wage is not a final solution, it will hopefully send the message that leaders see the jobs/cash flow situation as one of the greater ills facing our society. The rate of pay must keep up with the rate of inflation if future generations of Americans are to survive. If more people can begin to stand up and take some action, the good jobs fairy tale is one story that may rain true again.

Can anyone out there hear me? This is captain John Q. Public Commander of flight NYS. It appears that our systems are failing. Due to the overwhelming amounts of big gas company campaign dollars going into our fuel tanks we are losing power; our confidence in the public election process has faded. Our already depleted job supply is in danger of taking another hit, and our water supply has been hydrofracked. The weatherization in our low-income cabin is inadequate; we have lost many personnel to frostbite. We require immediate assistance and an emergency landing. We repeat, we require immediate assistance – now.”

“Flight NYS, this is the command center we are here to give assistance. We will guide you through the troubleshooting process. Have you tried auxiliary power?”

“Command center, it appears that no such apparatus was installed on this model. This fact has assured that these big gas companies will keep all the power while regular working people use contaminated drinking water, and low-income customers pay the highest costs to fly in the coldest cabins. We estimate that regular power will only last for the next 45 minutes.”

“Flight NYS, have you considered substituting other materials for your job supply?”

“Command center, these job substitutes are made of extremely substandard materials and they don’t pay a living wage. Services on the flight have been cut. At the same time, CEOs, i.e. job supply providers, have taken the only parachutes on the flight. They have seen a significant increase in pay and profits. If this process persists, we estimate that many will not survive for very long.”

“Flight NYS, the closest emergency landing area is in Buffalo, NY, its coordinates are 0716. This area is located about an hour from your current location. After your power fails, you will have approximately 10 to 12 minutes before gravity directs your plane into the ground.”

“Command center, this estimate doesn’t leave us with enough time.”

“Captain John Q, you will have to manually guide the plane to the landing coordinates upon power failure. From this point on you are on your own. May God be with you.”

On Saturday, May 12th, we are making our call to the world; our plane is in need of emergency assistance and we are going down. We must save ourselves – now. The plane was meant to malfunction mid-travel, thus ensuring our ultimate demise. The State of New York is in similar disarray.

Big corporations consider political campaign donations a part of the cost of doing business in New York State. They skirt public scrutiny because of their “deep pockets.” Regular folks, folks like you and I who don’t have the cash, are left out in the cold. In many cases, this lack of extreme financial wherewithal leaves residents powerless in defending their natural resources, like water. Low-income gas customers will receive little if any help in keeping their gas bills low. In a city and state in desperate need of living wage jobs, some companies only look out for themselves. While getting fat they use and throw away loyal domestic workers like an old pack of Lifestyle magazines.

As part of a statewide effort to shed light on what’s happening, PUSH Buffalo and the Coalition for Economic Justice will host a May Non-Violent Day of direct action in Buffalo. This event is part of the 99% Spring, a non-violent movement that directly confronts big corporations (i.e. the 1 percent) who refuse to work with the 99 percent on the issues we face. We’re asking everyone to meet us (very promptly) at 11 a.m. at 271 Grant Street (PUSH Buffalo headquarters) in Buffalo on Saturday, May 12th. We will have much to say and do. We hope to see you all soon!

Remember that bald white guy you thought was with the Aryan Nation? After talking with him, you found out he was a public defender who is a huge Nas fan. What about that young black guy with the trendy clothes you thought was a gang member? It turns out he is a unionized construction worker who owns a sleek Harley Davidson. How about the Arab-looking woman who you thought was some type of suicide bomber? After speaking with her, you find out that she is originally from Nepal and teaches underprivileged youth in a public school, and she loves Lady GaGa. And, oh yeah, that older Hispanic woman up the block who you thought was some type of welfare mom, thanks to the 17 children that you see come in and out of her house, actually runs a pretty popular daycare. “The Closer” is her favorite TV show and after further conversation, you find out that you live in the same area and that you have so much more in common.

Many of the barriers that we place upon ourselves are mainly superficial and based on television stereotypes. At the end of the day, we are all human beings who essentially want the same things: food, clothes, shelter, and good neighborhoods. The best way for people to get past their preconceived differences is by talking to each other.

“The lot across the street is very dirty and unsafe. Individually, we can’t afford it, but let’s find out how we can acquire it and turn it into something better. Perhaps we could turn it into a small playground for our kids, or even a garden.”

“That dilapidated old city firehouse would make a great community youth center. Where can we get started?”

“My son just lost his job. Will the new grocery store hire people from the neighborhood?”

“You’re a great drummer. I write poetry. There are many others like us in this community. The area could really use a place for small performances.”

“We could use more lighting on that busy street corner after dark.”

“My bike repair business has outgrown its current location, I was thinking about expanding into one of those larger old commercial buildings around the corner.”

“There are many mothers with younger children in our neighborhood who would love a pediatric care center close by.”

Well, the call went out and the community responded. On April 18th, PUSH Buffalo launched their Community Development Campaign Kickoff at the Butler-Mitchell Boys & Girls Club as a way to listen to and engage the community on what they felt they needed in the community. The conversation was between community members (specifically on Buffalo’s West Side) and the topics of conversation ranged from community gardens, to vacant housing and lot preservation, to commercial space management, to small businesses development.

We are all about building power through community involvement and that’s exactly what our Campaign Kickoff displayed.
For those of you who don’t know, the West Side consists largely of working class people. Many of us are low-income individuals of different ages and ethnic backgrounds. In the past, access to power is something that has not been available.

Keeping this in mind, we wanted to make residents aware that we want to put together a plan that truly encompasses the community on many different levels.

So, why do we need a community development plan? Well, some of us budget our finances. Some of us have been saving for small purchases. Others among us plan the outfits we’ll wear tomorrow. A good coach prepares his team before every game and that’s exactly what we are doing. Why not plan for the things that will work best for everybody in our neighborhood?

PUSH Buffalo, with the help of the community, is developing a plan for the development of our neighborhood. And, our greatest resource is you! The development, or redevelopment, of our area will depend on having broad community participation. And, our kickoff is only the beginning – to get involved, stay tuned here and at www.thegoodneighborhood.com for upcoming events, or contact us at 716-884-0356 or info@pushbuffalo.org.

Activism has become such a dirty word. Nowadays, activists are often portrayed in the news and movies as an angry mob. True, activism is a form of confrontation, but this confrontation usually occurs when communication between two opposing sides has broken down.

Many successful reforms throughout history have come about through activism. These reforms, whether political or economical, took place because people came together to fight for the betterment of society. These folks peacefully, and at times, loudly, confronted large powers that, individually, they could not battle themselves.

Yes, there have been demonstrations in the past in which things have gotten out of control and people used violence as a way to “solve” the problem. Inevitably, people got hurt (on both sides) and the chasm widened.

This, along with several other reasons, is why we at PUSH believe wholeheartedly in having a plan. Fighting for the betterment of your community or town is great; but it’s completely pointless when you don’t have a plan. Confronting an issue without one is disastrous, especially when you lack the proper training or education.

In the U.S., activism is a vehicle that people use to collectively attain what their big city governments cannot. And, sometimes you have to become the loudest person in the room to do this. For many of us, the power to get noticed, collectively, can mean the difference between life and death.

Hence, the creation of the 99% Spring.

The 99% Spring was conceived by members of NPA – National People’s Action – as a way to non-violently end the rise of the one percent. The first 99% Spring training was held in New York City. Members from community groups from across the country, such as PUSH Buffalo, Citizen Action of Western New York (CA), and the Coalition for Economic Justice (CEJ), attended this training to learn the right way to be an activist.

Empowered by what we learned at the 99% Spring training, PUSH Buffalo, CA, and CEJ hosted a training of our own on April 10th. The turnout was beyond our expectations. In a packed room, people from all walks of life attentively took part. Everyone learned something new.

As one of the local 99% Spring training facilitators, we are urging people who attended this training or may be attending similar trainings to use this knowledge to become noticed by those in power. We have to collectively speak up to keep and improve upon what we’ve worked so hard for. There are many struggles that affect us here locally. We ask that you find one that speaks to you and join in.

Trayvon Martin, racial profiling and the gated community

<itunes:author />

As the apparent (or not so apparent) accidental death of 17-year old Trayvon Martin in a gated, Florida community ignites a firestorm of controversy across the nation; stereotypes surrounding race and class are once again on the forefront of people’s minds.

As we now know, Trayvon Martin, black, was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, who is, white. Zimmerman has confessed to shooting Martin. He has given the “I thought he had a gun reason” for pulling the trigger that tragically ended this young man’s life.

Now as an investigation is underway and facts surrounding that night’s tragic incident are being gathered, a few things remain clear; a man who was armed shot an unarmed African American male in a predominately white neighborhood. Zimmerman thought Martin was carrying a gun (a gun that included snacks, soda and a cell phone). When Martin was shot, it was at night and raining outside. Zimmerman was patrolling the neighborhood in his car when he spotted Martin, who was on his way back to his mother’s house, walking through the neighborhood. Upon initially seeing Martin, Zimmerman notified authorities (thank God for 911) based solely on the fact that Martin “looked suspicious.” After being told by a 911 dispatcher to stand down, Zimmerman for some reason decided to leave his vehicle and “apprehend” Martin before the police arrived. The result, as we all now know, was the death of teenage Martin. Over the last few days, (thanks to Geraldo Rivera), it has been revealed that Martin was wearing a “hoodie” (slang for hooded sweat shirt). Since this hooded revelation, Zimmerman has gone on record stating that his community has seen a rise in crime in recent months and that because of this; his actions were warranted in order to protect his community.

A gated community is well, just that, a gated community. A community with its own homes, streets and parks built inside gates with controlled entrances for the people who reside there. These distinct communities are different from traditional communities, in that most of the properties are not only expensive but also, secluded (and, for kicks, they come with there very own security team!). For the most part, most people tend to live in gated communities because of there exclusiveness – and, I mean, we all know how great exclusivity is, right? Right! (For those of you wondering what this might look like in Buffalo, think Spaulding Lake, or Selby Court.)

So in a sense, to some Trayvon Martin’s presence would not be a typical sight in a gated community. But, it is. In 2012 there are African Americans who reside in these types of places. (And no, it’s not a “here comes the neighborhood” moment. Blacks can (and do) live in gated communities – hell some might even live in yours.)

I am not a mind reader but one wonders what was going through the mind of Zimmerman upon observing Martin (a young black man), walking through his gated community in a hooded sweat shirt, with “stuff,” or a gun in his pocket. Zimmerman might’ve been thinking, “Who in the hell left the gate open? How did this one breach our defense systems? Oh well, no matter I shall save us from the barbarian invasion.” I wonder if Martin had been of another race (and wearing a hoodie), let’s say white, if Zimmerman would’ve still considered him suspicious? Would he have acted so hastily in the situation and rushed to judgment? We don’t know the answer to these questions. It is known however that when one is consumed by fear and bigotry, all reasonable sense goes out the window.

As thousands of people take to the streets in various demonstrations around the country calling for an arrest (and for the prosecution of Zimmerman), I feel as if we are still missing the larger issue.

Racial profiling (or the close observation of certain individuals based upon their racial makeup) of black people, particularly young black males, is something that unfortunately is an everyday occurrence in many communities throughout America. I say unfortunately because the profiling usually occurs for all the wrong reasons. For example, the police “stretches” the writer of this piece, who is a young black male with no arrest record, at least three to four times a year. And, for those of you who don’t know what being “stretched” is all about, please let me explain. Being stretched is different than being stopped by police. When the police “stretches” someone, you are submitted to the complete song and dance. So instead of being asked for your ID, given an appearance ticket and sent on your way, you will be submitted to a thorough, often times humiliating search – a search that includes going through your trunk, glove compartments, shoes, socks, and maybe even your underwear. I mean after all, the guns and the drugs, have got to be hidden somewhere.

What makes Trayvon Martin’s situation so unfortunate is due in large part to where and how it happened. Taking this situation and holding it up as a litmus test only shows how far we as a country still need to go. Racial and class equality have a long road ahead of them before we, as a country, can get to a place where these things no longer matter. It’s a place where a young, black boy can walk down the street of a gated community (or any community for that matter) and not be accosted by the police because he looks suspicious.

The greatest tragedy about Trayvon Martin is that it took his death to get people in this country (at least in large numbers) to revisit the problems that we have with class and race. Who is a criminal? What does a criminal look like? What does a criminal wear? That depends on who’s doing the looking.

NPA is a network of community based organizations from around the country who work feverishly (on local and national stages), to help construct an American society that works for everyone (and not just for those who have the money to buy access to power). Much of PUSH's work in bringing big parasitic entities (like National Fuel gas, and big banks) down to the layman's level, coincides with our NPA partners.

The NPA leadership conference is meant as a forum where NPA member organizations (such as PUSH Buffalo) can share their individual victories from the past year with each other. NPA requests that the various member organizations send a couple of members who have been highly active in their organizations work to this conference. The total number of delegates (from around the nation) each year is usually somewhere around 100 people.

Cariol and George shared with leaders from other organizations the work that PUSH Buffalo has been doing. Cariol and George also learned what other progressive groups are doing, and have done in their perspective communities.

NPA, as well as PUSH Buffalo believes that this process of victory/idea sharing makes everyone involved in the confrontation against corporate power stronger. It's almost like that 1980's cartoon Voltron (or Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), each NPA member organization forms an important part of the warriors body. So Voltron without his head, an arm, or his blazing sword would be much prone to defeat by the ro-beast (in this case corporate power).

Held Friday February 24, 2012 inside the Grant Street Neighborhood Center (GSNC), the community appreciated this event (judging by the many happy faces in attendance), by blessing us with their attendance. Organizers estimate that as many as 150-175 people attended the event. People and performers alike just had a good, ole time.

More than just giving young people something to do, the open mic was first conceived by young people (who use the GSNC on a daily basis), as a way of creatively using the space to engage the surrounding community. What could be better than neighbors getting together to appreciate the young talent in their own back yard?

The types performances ran the gamut of artistic creativity. Included in the line up of the 18 artists who performed were; poets, MC's (some may refer to them as rappers), gospel hip hoppers, acoustic guitarists, violin players, singers, dance performances, an art painting performance, and some essay readings.

Performers who especially went in, and did their thing were; Mariah Tirado (poetry), Jamar Crump (dancing), Desinty and Ambilique Sierra (singing separate songs), and Eddie Bristow (accompanying guitar).

A special shout out of appreciation goes out to all volunteers for this event. These volunteers included students from several high schools through the Speak Your Mind & Shape Your World literary journal (Elizabeth Borngraber). Students/volunteers from Buffalo State College, Houghton College, the GSNC (Megan Little), and PUSH Buffalo members also helped out. Students from these colleges, Buffalo city common council member David Rivera (who has been a supporter of GSNC since day one), as well as many people from outside the immediate neighborhood were in the audience. The sound system for the event was donated for the evening by Ismail & Company.

Community control of resources, or the control of something by the community. This is what PUSH Buffalo has been preaching since first forming. When the people who live in a neighborhood can control what goes on (in this case a key building/community center) on their block, only good things can happen for them. Just imagine what would've happened if the library (GSNC) was left mothballed. Community building events like the West Side Open Mic would never have been conceived, let alone happen. The only thing that would've been celebrated in that location on February 24, would have been blight.

On the morning of Saturday February 18, 2012, members of some local groups (groups that represent regular working folks), gathered together to figure out how to fight for a fair economy. Members of PUSH Buffalo, Citizen Action, the Coalition for Economic Justice (CEJ), SEIU 1199, CSEA local 815, Niagara Organizing Alliance for Hope (NOAH), and others participated in a confronting corporate power training.

Participants at this training learned and shared strategies for; confronting big parasitic corporations, educating the public on corporate abuse of power, and ways of tackling the political influence these parasitic corporations may have.

The existence of corporate tax loop holes was sited as a way for big corporations to escape paying their fair share (in many cases getting tax breaks in the multi-millions of dollars), while many needed services (transportation, schools, healthcare) that regular folks need, get cut.
