Going green is not just a lifestyle, it's about survival. It's about taking the lead in demonstrating to the world what a sustainable community looks like. PUSH Buffalo is about practicing what we preach. The momentum from winning the International Sustainable Urban Housing Competition has kept PUSH Buffalo and our partner organizations moving. This award is only part of the battle, there still is much much work to be done.
The Buffalo Green Development Zone
located on Massachusetts Avenue on Buffalo's West side, although not yet completed is a beautiful thing. It includes a half city block of vacated properties that were first identified and then acquired by the community. They are being transformed into energy efficient, affordable, and livable housing units for community residents. As was the goal all along, the community has been on the winning side of this development. PUSH Buffalo members previously involved with the Youth Build program have been able to gain living wage employment working for contracting companies associated with this project.
Several properties within the Zone have recently been gutted in preparation for retrofitting and weatherization work. Just around the corner on Winter St. PUSH Buffalo's Net Zero House
(a home being completely energy efficient, generating its own heat and electricity) will be ready for opening in early summer 2011. The definition of a leader is one who shows what is possible and this would not be possible without the leadership of the community. We want to thank the community, it's stakeholders, and our partner organizations for standing in the trenches with us. We may have lost a few battles, but we will win the Green Development Zone War.
